A visit to Bateshwar, in Uttar Pradesh, for the animal fair is a truly memorable experience, mostly because you will probably be the only tourists at the Fair! The quantity of horses is outstanding and the whole area buzzes with the flow of animals coming and going: cattle, horses, camels and donkeys. The Fair lasts for many days but plan your trip around the dates the horses should be at their greatest number and you will hopefully coincide with the annual horse show, showcasing some impressive equine skills. Bateshwar has a picturesque location on the banks of the Yamuna River and the ancient temple complex consists of more than 100 temples dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Although the origins of this historic fair are religious, the fair is also of great commercial importance and is renowned as the second largest animal fair in the country.
